A long time ago, in a small village near the beach in West Sumatra, lived a boy named Malin Kundang. He was a smart and diligent boy, but he was also poor. One day, he decided to go sailing to try his luck. He promised his mother that he would return after becoming a successful man.

Years passed, and Malin Kundang became a wealthy merchant. However, he forgot his promise to his mother. When he returned to his village, he was ashamed of his poor mother and refused to acknowledge her. Heartbroken, his mother prayed for him to be punished. Suddenly, a storm came, and Malin Kundang turned into stone.
